Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu
In this class students will learn traditional Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) wearing a gi or kimono. Students will learn takedowns, sweeps, escapes, and submissions. One of the most important aspects of traditional BJJ is learning to use your or opponents gi as a weapon. Students will learn how to effectively utilize leverage and technique with collar chokes, sleeve grips, and gi utilization to control much larger opponents or attackers. This class is great for self-defense or people wanting to get in shape or compete in grappling events.
No Gi Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu
Our No Gi grappling focuses on Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and wrestling. Students will learn sweeps, escapes, and submissions with proper positioning and leverage. This class will also have more of an emphasis on wrestling which utilizes takedowns and takedown defense. The goal being to provide students with the knowledge and ability to control the range in which real conflicts occur. Each class is comprised of warm ups, technique, and live and/or positional sparring. This class is great for self-defense or people wanting to get in shape or compete in grappling events.
Gi or No Gi?
Benefits of Gi training
Often times new students or aspiring MMA fighters want to skip training in the gi, however when learning the fundamentals the gi can be a very powerful tool. Students quickly learn that the gi strips them of their explosiveness and athleticism forcing them to utilize proper technique and leverage. The gi helps to create fundamentally sound grapplers and can help prevent bad habits such as relying on physical attributes to advance position or escape bad positions. The gi can also teach you how to use an attackers clothing as a weapon in a street scenario.
Benefits of No Gi training
No Gi Jiu-Jitsu is often times more directly applicable to fighting and self defense scenarios. Many “Gi Only” or “BJJ purists” will form bad habits of relying on the gi for grips and manipulating their opponents base. Once confronted with a situation where these grips are no longer available, some students will find themselves lost or confused. No Gi classes will quickly help solve all of these issues.
Gi or No Gi, mat time is the best way to get better, period. So the first thing we recommend is getting started! That said, Tactical Combat Academy recommends that all new grapplers train in both Gi and No Gi jiu jitsu. Once a student has a strong grasp on the fundamentals of submission grappling they can decide which one is right for them.
